FORGE YOUR WAY FORWARD: Principles of Strategic Agility

One day. All in. Better Strategy.

Get your board + staff together and learn HOW to connect strategy to action so your organization can confidently navigate an increasingly complex future.

How can you create a plan that remains useful through multiple iterations of work, relevant in the wake of fast-paced changes, and realistic in the astonishingly complex, ever-evolving world of work?

You can’t.

What you CAN do is learn the prime principles of strategic agility. Learn THAT, and you’ll change the way your organization operates for good.

Join me for Forge Your Way Forward and walk away with tools for agile, effective strategic planning!

When you get a group of board members + staff with aligned priorities AND the planning skills to work effectively towards them, everything shifts.

Your organization becomes able to transcend change and complexity, because you’re not tied to “the plan”, you’re tied to the outcome that emerges from aligned, ongoing learning. You can easily create and adapt as the shifting circumstances of your work demand — and still know that you’re going to be consistently investing in what matters most.

Disciplined principles + total flexibility = the ability to truly deliver on your organization’s potential and the freedom to forge your way forward, no matter what happens.

When everyone on your team has the same set of planning skills:

— Pivots get easier.

— Strategic planning starts to make sense.

— Systems start working FOR you.

— Meetings become meaningful.

— Change becomes possible.

Why you should spend your limited resources on learning how to strategically plan better:

You don’t need to spend yet another day setting goals or re-establishing mission statements. You need to connect the dots between outcomes, action, and how to forge the better way forward.

When your entire board operates in alignment — skills, tools, and language included — decisions get made faster. Burnout happens less. And you can stay on track, no matter what conditions change along the way.

How you can make that happen for your organization?

A 6-hour experiential learning workshop, co-created with your core leadership team.

“My eyes were opened to how much energy we lose to organizational multitasking. We walked away with many ideas around being more agile and accepting of emerging priorities.”

WHAT IS IT?

Onsite strategic agility + leadership workshop

This energizing, interactive workshop is designed to introduce and practice new strategic planning principles, create space for meaningful conversations, and prepare leaders to focus and prioritize what matters most at any given moment, while remaining focused on long-term goals.

Your leadership team will walk away with a completely new set of shared skills for strategic planning, stakeholder engagement, reinvigorated energy, focus for the road ahead, and a clear path for turning strategy into action.

THIS IS BEST FOR:

Small to medium-sized nonprofit and mission-driven organizations that…

— Know they need a strategic plan, but don’t have the budget to hire a facilitator to guide them through the process of creating one. (And really hate the idea of paying for a plan that’s more than likely going to be outdated before they get through implementing it!)

— Want the outside perspective of a facilitator who has been working with leaders on developing agile strategy for over a decade — and whose heart is in helping small organizations get the same quality of planning. I love bringing the same kind of value as the work I do with organizations like the University of Minnesota and 3M to small nonprofits making big changes.

— Are done spending time and money creating plan after plan, only to find them falling into irrelevance weeks later, and are looking for a better way to get started actually doing strategic planning that results in real, tangible forward motion.

THE DETAILS:

Forge Your Way Forward retreats run for up to 6 hours, and can accommodate up to 15 people.

Kickoff Session

90-minute video meeting prior to our workshop with a small group to prioritize specific goals of our time together, identify essential participants, co-create a working agenda, and prepare for the workshop.

No one knows your organization better than you. We spend time learning about your goals and how we can come alongside to build on what’s already working for your team.

Onsite Strategic Agility + Leadership Workshop

Full-day (up to 6 hours); interactive workshop designed to teach your board members + staff the skills they need to create effective, agile strategic plans and give them space to practice implementing their new skills. We’ll facilitate the conversations that need to happen to ensure stakeholder engagement and get everyone pulling in the same direction, and co-create a clear set of next steps for so you can continue the work of strategic planning.

Without the skills, you can’t connect strategy to action. Without the engagement, you won’t use what you’ve learned. We cover all our bases in this highly interactive, enjoyable workshop to make sure your organization ends up with a team that’s both able and excited for strategic planning.

Follow-up Session

60-minute video meeting focused on helping leaders integrate insights from the workshop into action-oriented strategic planning, must be used within 45 days of the workshop.

Turning learning into action is hard. You aren’t alone. This session is designed to integrate the retreat into your day-to-day reality.

FAQs:

So, will we leave with a strategic plan?

Nope, but you will leave with a Playbook + Strategy ToolBook that will set you up for success in creating one. Past participants have said the playbook was like good vacation photos — bringing everyone back to the energy and focus of the day. You’ll also walk away with a StrategyToolBook to self-guide the rest of your strategic planning conversations and a template for your strategic plan. Your tailored Strategy ToolBook will include practical tools for designing a theory of change, mapping stakeholder engagement, defining your mission, values, and outcomes, evaluation financial sustainability, setting priorities objectives + key results, and most importantly–turning all of that into ACTION.

Is this going to be another session on setting SMART goals or wordsmithing mission statements?

Words matter, and so do goals … but this day will be about building shared understanding, common language, practicing new skills so that when it’s time to set priorities, measurable goals, and make sure your words matter it won’t be a painful, drawn-out process. It will be fast, energizing, and above all, effective.

Will we be doing trust falls and human knots?

Definitely not. The best way to build trust is to work together and have fun doing it. That being said, we will ask everyone to engage differently than they might at a typical board meeting — all in service of reaching our goals and embedding this way of thinking and operating in your organization.

“It was the clearest articulation of our work and how it is connected with our vision that I’ve seen in 10 years of being part of this organization.”
Ross Cully

Board Chair, 99 Balloons/CEO, Harvest Group

Will we be able to move forward on our own or will we be left needing to spend more money?

You’ll absolutely be able to move forward on your own. This isn’t a chance to upsell for me, it’s a chance to do the work that’s closest to my heart. I love working with small organizations, this is my response to how to do that so I can offer something high value and also affordable, so I can bring the same kind of value as the work I do with my biggest clients to small nonprofits (my midwest sensibilities feel very anxious about tooting my own horn here).

If you do find that you want to do more work together after our time together though, I’m up for that too!

Some ways I can partner with you after these workshops include:

Practical Consulting: I excel at providing behind the scenes support as you lead your strategic planning effort.

Communications, data, or evaluation audits: Once you get aligned on strategy, we can take a look at how well your current practices support your priorities so you can be confident that everything you invest supports the outcomes you want to achieve.

Leadership Coaching: Planning differently requires leading differently. I love coming alongside leaders as they navigate the new terrain.

How do I get my organization on your schedule?

It’s easy — just follow the link below, and we’ll send you an invitation for a complimentary “fit” call. If we both get off the call feeling like it’s a go, and if Brandi has availability, we’ll get you scheduled ASAP.

How long will we need to wait?

Generally, we accommodate scheduling 6-8 weeks out and do not schedule more than 12 months in advance. We do, however, only offer four slots per quarter, so suggest scheduling as early as possible to secure preferred dates. We do have clients who do this with us on an annual basis as a refresher, so scheduling as far in advance as possible is recommended.
